The concept of gathering for intellectual discourse spans cultures and centuries. From the French salons of the 17th and 18th centuries—where aristocratic women hosted discussions that shaped Enlightenment thinking—to the majlis of the Islamic world, where poetry and philosophy flourished, humans have always created spaces for deeper dialogue.

These traditions took many forms:

• The British coffeehouses, known as “penny universities”
• The Indian tradition of Purva Paksha, requiring deep understanding before critique
• African Palaver gatherings, combining wisdom-sharing with community building
• Chinese tea houses, where scholars engaged in philosophical discourse
